Temporary rest centers, safe houses, and mobile aid points.
The Scenario
In Nigeria, over 50 million people that travel everyday are exposed to various risks ranging from avoidable accidents occasioned by bad and poorly constructed roads to armed robbery, kidnapping for ransom or ritual, unnecessary delays from checking points; legal or illegal, harassment /monetary extortion etc. No serious nation in the world can afford to let this huge population of its citizens travel without any form of protection. What we have in Nigeria is camouflage or lopsided insurance cover for travelling vehicles, (Comprehensive or Third- Party Insurance Policies). No provision has been made for citizens that travel with these vehicles. What a pity. What a Nation.
The story is not different in other forms of travelling: Air, Railway and Sea. The most sympathetic and classical case that will continue to haunt Nigerians, is the Sea travelling, careless accident that took the life of Nollywood Actor popularly called Junior Pope. Travellers loose their baggages, personal effects and business engagements without recourse to any form of compensation. Flights are delayed or cancelled without taking Travellers interest into consideration. The question Travellers are asking is: how long shall we continue this way….?
The cost of travelling by air is beyond the reach of ordinary Nigerians. Presently, one-way flight ticket within Nigeria for less than 45 minutes flying time is twice the salary of a senior civil servant. No average Nigerian can afford to travel by air except he/she is involved in one form of corruption or the other. Airline operators complain of maintenance cost, aviation fuel etc. Nigerians must demand solutions to these problems. For us in Travellers Rights and Welfare Foundation, we will continue to ask how did Nigeria get into this mess? On the other hand, travelling by sea or railway does not even provide any option for safety.
Transport fares are increased at the pleasure of Transport owners without justifiable reasons. Vehicles that are not road worthy are being used to convey Travelers to distant places which makes such vehicles breakdown. When this happens, Travelers loose money. No body respects the social contract written or oral that mandates Transporters to convey Travelers to agreed destinations in good condition within a reasonable time while the contract subsists. It is on the basis of these anomalies that Travellers Rights and Welfare Foundation is established. Travellers Rights and welfare Foundation was registered with Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria on the 4th of February, 2019.
The Passion to Save Lives
Throughout my life’s journey, I have experienced numerous travel-related hazards—ranging from violent attacks and robbery by both state and non-state actors to reckless driving and severe road accidents. The memories and trauma from these incidents remain with me and continue to shape my commitment to the welfare of travellers.
I often recall an incident years ago in Ebelle, Edo State, when armed robbers stopped our vehicle, stripped all passengers of their belongings, and left us completely naked. Local farmers came to our rescue, offering us old farm clothes and guided us to the nearest police station. Shockingly, instead of receiving help, the officers mocked us and dismissed our experience, saying we “deserved it” because passengers often discourages drivers from appreciating police officers on the highways.
On another occasion along the Mararaba–Nyanya Road, a trailer loaded with cement lost control and crushed more than six vehicles. I was miraculously found alive. Since that day, I have never allowed a trailer to drive closely behind me. That incident, more than any other, solidified my resolve to dedicate my life to serving travellers and supporting victims of travel-related incidents wherever they may be.
Today, that resolve has materialized through the emergence of Travellers Rights and Welfare Foundation. To God be the glory.
However, this mission is bigger than one person. With your support, we can protect travellers, save lives, and make the world safer. Your willingness to volunteer can create real change.
Please join me—together, we can serve humanity. Only volunteer.
Thank you.
